Mathematics is the backbone of the Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) and constitutes the highest weightage subject for students seeking admission to UET, NED, and other engineering universities. ECAT Mathematics typically carries 40–45 questions out of a total of 100–120, making it approximately 35–40% of the entire test. All questions are MCQs with four options. The test is timed, so speed and accuracy are both critical.
Algebraic topics dominate ECAT Mathematics. Key areas include: quadratic equations and their nature of roots (discriminant), systems of linear equations, matrices and determinants (2×2 and 3×3), arithmetic and geometric progressions, binomial theorem, and partial fractions. Matrices and determinants alone typically account for 5–7 questions.
Trigonometry in ECAT covers: general angle measurement and radian conversion, trigonometric identities (double angle, half angle, sum-to-product), trigonometric equations and their general solutions, inverse trigonometric functions, and solution of triangles using sine and cosine rules.
